What is Bauer Bump?

A Bauer Bump is what ice hockey players call a Haglund’s deformity. Haglund’s deformity is an enlargement of the posterior superior aspect of the calcaneus or heel bone. As the bone is a bit larger than average the footwear can place additional pressure on the bone and cause an inflammatory bursitis. In sports like ice hockey, they can become a real problem as the footwear used are very rigid. As Bauer is the biggest ice hockey skate manufacturer, this problem has been nicknamed the Bauer Bump by ice hockey players.

The bump is best managed with modifications to the skate and a good skate boot fitter can help with that. Protective padding can also be used to get the pressure off the bump. This may be a cushioning padding or a horse shoe shaped padding to get pressure off the bump. Surgery should also be considered.
