How to have good foot hygiene?

Foot hygiene is so important as we expect so much of our feet. They carry our body weight and we put them in the dark and moist environment of shoes that bacteria and fungi love to grow in. Having good foot hygiene is actually pretty simple, and it makes a big difference.

This is what you should do for good foot hygiene:

1. Wash Daily:
Use warm water and mild soap to wash your feet every day.
Scrub gently, especially between the toes and around the nails, where dirt and sweat collect.
Don’t soak your feet for too long—it can dry out the skin.

2. Dry Thoroughly:
Pat your feet dry with a towel, paying special attention to the spaces between your toes (moisture here can lead to fungus).

3. Moisturize:
Apply a good foot cream or lotion to keep skin soft, especially the heels and soles.
Avoid putting moisturizer between your toes—it can trap moisture and lead to fungal infections.

4. Wear Clean, Breathable Socks:
Change your socks daily, or more often if you sweat a lot.
Go for moisture-wicking or cotton socks—they help keep your feet dry.

5. Choose Proper Footwear:
Wear shoes that fit well, are breathable, and give your feet room.
Rotate your shoes so they have time to air out between uses.
Don’t walk barefoot in public places like locker rooms or pools—use flip-flops or sandals.

6. Trim Toenails Carefully:
Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown nails.
Don’t cut them too short, and keep the edges smooth.

7. Inspect Regularly:
Check your feet for cuts, blisters, cracks, or any signs of infection.
If you notice anything unusual (redness, swelling, foul odour, thickened nails), treat it early or see a podiatrist.
