By far the most common cause of pain in the heels in the ages 8 to 12 years is a condition known as Sever’s disease (calcaneal apophysitis). It is typically aggravated by sports activities.
There is a growth plate at the back of the heel bone where growth occurs at. In those in the 8-12 yr age group who are very active, it is possible to “strain” that growth plate leading to the Sever’s disease. That growth plate does eventually merge with the rest of the heel bone, so when this happens, it can no longer be a problem.
The treatment of Sever’s disease is generally aimed at managing the activity levels and protecting the heel with cushioning.
This condition is not the only cause of heel pain that is aggravated by sporting activity, but it is the most likely cause.
